Fall Festival Competitions

Due date for all application materials is: September 22, 2019

Winners of the Young Artist, Collegiate, Senior Artist, and Junior Artist competitions will be presented with a cash prize and perform at the 2020 SCFS Flute Festival.

Competition Application Form

Application fees for each competition are $25. If applying to both the Artist Competition and the Masterclass Competition in your age category, the fees will total $50. All applicants must also register as members of the South Carolina Flute Society if they are not already members (application forms are available at www.scflute.org/membership/). Fees may be paid via PayPal here: South Carolina Flute Society PayPal or by check (made out to South Carolina Flute Society) to Dr. Esther Waite, SCFS Treasurer at: Bob Jones University, 1700 Wade Hampton Blvd., Greenville, SC 29614. Please include your name and competition on the memo line.

  • Artist Competition Details

Finalists must attend the 2019 SCFS Fall Festival November 15-16 at The University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC. Applicants must be current members of SCFS or submit a membership form and fee along with their application. Competitors are subject to all rules and regulations provided, thus it is important to read all of the details for each competition.

Three finalists for each Artist competition will be selected based on the submitted recordings to perform in the live finals on November 16 in South Carolina. Winners will be awarded cash prizes as listed below:

Junior Artist Competition | Grade 9 and Younger | $100 Cash Prize

Carolina Flutes by Musical Innovations Senior Artist Competition | Grades 10-12 | $100 Cash Prize

Contance G. Lane Memorial Collegiate Artist Competition | College Undergraduates | $400 Cash Prize

J.L Smith and Co. Young Artist Competition | All Flutists Post-Undergraduate | $600 Cash Prize

Required Repertoire:

Two contrasting selections of choice must be submitted as DropBox links in the application form. The total time of the submitted selections must not exceed 25 minutes. Individual movements of a single work may be submitted as contrasting selections. Likewise, shorter movements may be combined into a single selection for the purpose of the application. Works that require piano accompaniment must be recorded with piano.

  • Masterclass Competition Details

Masterclass Competition | College and Older

Junior Masterclass Competition | High School and Younger

Four winners of the Masterclass Competition and one winner of the Junior Masterclass Competition will be selected to perform in a masterclass led by guest artist Claire Chase on November 16.

Two contrasting selections of choice must be submitted as DropBox links in the application form. The total time of the submitted selections must not exceed 25 minutes. Individual movements of a single work may be submitted as contrasting selections. Likewise, shorter movements may be combined into a single selection for the purpose of the application. Works that require piano accompaniment must be recorded with piano.

  • Composition Competition Details

Introducing the SCFS Composition Competition! One winner of the Composer Competition will have their flute solo performed by a member of the South Carolina Flute Society on a recital at the Fall Festival.

To apply to the composer competition, a score and recording of a work for solo flute or flute and piano should be submitted as DropBox links in the online Competition Form. *Please note: the composition should not exceed 8 minutes*
